What is a 2g data plan with verizon mean?

So i am getting the iphone and was told i have to get a data plan, It wont be till after july 7th which is when they are taking out the unlimited so it will be 2g for 30 bucks, What does that mean and how much time will it be, will the iphone use it all up by just it's downloading off the verizon network?
